on wildfire smoke in places it usually isn't

think I finally understand
the billionaire's obsession
with Mars.

a hundred thousand years
since humans first "tamed"
fire, and yet

that animal instinct to flee
at the smell of smoke
remains.

with the sky milk-white
and the scent inescapable,
where else do we run?
